Akron earns 300th win at the JAR against Toledo 71-65

 

The Akron Zips Men’s basketball team defeated the Toledo Rockets Tuesday night to earn Keith Dambrot’s 300th win at James A. Rhodes Arena. Akron is now 22 and 4 on the season and still in sole control of the MAC with a record of 12-1.

Senior Kwan Cheatham scored a total of 21 points and was 7 for 15 from the court. Also, senior Isaiah Johnson added 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Junior guard Antino Jackson had a decent game and pitched in 13 points, two assists, and was 3 of 7 from three point range. Akron shot just 12 for 31 from the court in the first half(38.7%), but connected on 5 three pointers to maintain leads throughout the game. As a team, Akron grabbed 40 rebounds, dished out 17 assists, and had four blocks.

Down the stretch in the second half, the Zips continued to get the ball to Isaiah Johnson who converted on many layups to keep the Zips in front. Akron was able to close out the game with free throws from seniors Cheatham and Johnson, and junior Antino Jackson.

Akron is home on Friday night and will take on Kent State in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge rivalry game at 7 pm. Kent State is led by senior forward  Jimmy Hall who is averaging 18 points per game, while Akron’s senior Isaiah Johnson is averaging about 16.7 points per contest. Akron will look to win their fourth straight game.
