Akron Escapes over Defending MAC champion Buffalo 91-90

On Saturday night, the Akron Zips were able to stay undefeated in the MAC beating the 2016 MAC champion Buffalo Bulls 91-90 in front of a very special guest by the name of LeBron James. Both teams went back and forth the entire game, and in the final minutes it came down to the last possession, however Akron was able to prevail with the win. The Akron Zips are now 18 and 3 on the season.

Senior Kwan Cheatham played very well scoring a season high 31 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. He knocked down seven key three-pointers that gave the Zips leads throughout the game, and was 7 for 13 from deep. Also, senior Isaiah Johnson scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He went 9 for 19 from the free throw line, but was able to knock down one free throw in the closing seconds of the game after getting fouled to seal the deal.

Guards Antino Jackson and Josh Williams both were also huge for the Zips both finishing with 12 points, combining for 7 for 16 from the court and making clutch shots when needed. In the first half the Zips shot very well from the free throw line making 12 of 15 shots (80%), but shot very poorly in the second making only 14 of 25 attempts.(56%)

Akron is away next against the Northern Illinois Huskies who are tied for first in the MAC West conference with 5 wins and 3 losses. The game will take place on Tuesday night at 8 pm at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Illinois. Center Marin Maric leads the team with 13 points per game, while Akron is lead by senior center Isaiah Johnson who averages 16.2 points per game.
