New Month, Fresh Start, Big Win.
The Cleveland Cavaliers opened up the first day of Black History Month by defending the Land and beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 125-97 .
Cavaliers small forward LeBron James started the night off by receiving the NAACP Jackie Robinson Sports Award which is presented to individuals in sports for their high achievement in athletics and contributions in the pursuit of social justice, civil rights, and community involvement. This award follows a career of success on the court as well as his charitable contributions such as the LeBron James Family Foundation.
Point guard Kyrie Irving and center Tristan Thompson continued their chemistry tonight with the pick and roll game that they have been incorporating with impressive ease over the past few games. It worked so well that Irving hit a career high Cavs fans: keep an eye out for this becoming a routine play for the pair.
The Cavs had a plethora of leaders last night, racking up three double-doubles from LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Tristan Thompson. Shooting guard Kyle Korver and power forward Channing Frye also lead the lead team, scoring 20 and 18 points respectively. This offensive team effort set a refreshing pace after the losses January handed the Cavs.
Leading the scoring for the Timberwolves was center Karl-Anthony Towns with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Andrew Wiggins with 23 points, and Ricky Rubio with 14 points and 13 assists.
This win was crucial to set a precedent for the rest of February. The Cavs will travel to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Knicks this Saturday.
