Zips Men’s Soccer takes a Mac win over SIU Edwardsville
The Zips Men’s Soccer team netted three goals in their win over MAC opponent SIU Edwardsville. Joao Moutinho recorded two of the goals from Skye Harter corner kicks. His duel scoring effort was somewhat in the name of redemption because Moutinho served up the lone goal against the Zips as a lazy pass, which SIU defenders intercepted in the area and subsequently scored. “I made an unfortunate mistake, but I was able to come back with two goals, and I’m very happy for that. The whole team did well. I’d really like to make that point. Everyone was running towards one goal, and when that happens, things just get easier for you.” Moutinho said when asked about his set-piece goals.
Forward Marcel Zajac scored the Zips’ first goal in just the second minute. Skye Harter played a ball in to the center from the end line for the assist.
The Zips dominated possession for most of the game. SIU was playing on their heels with Akron deep in the attacking third. The zips ended with 12 total shots, five of them on goal. It was no problem for them to create chances, but good goal keeping and missed chances kept the score from running up.
Akron improves their record to 8-3-1 and 1-1 in the MAC. Their next match is home against #7 Notre Dame on Tuesday Oct 17 at 7Pm.
